What is the Rice Purity Test?

The Rice Purity Test is a one-hundred-question survey that assesses a person’s level of innocence in the domain of worldly vices, with a score of 100 being the most pure and 0 being the least pure. It includes risqué questions on sex, drugs, crime, deceit and other activities considered non-virtuous. The questions are answered by an individual themselves, simply having to select ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ for each question.

The survey originated in Rice University, Houston, Texas in 1924 to gauge students’ level of maturity and to help them bond with each other. The Rice Purity Test has undergone several refinements over the years to reach its modern form. It has long since found a life online and is a popular way of having some fun with friends.

The purpose of the survey was to gauge how the experience of university life was shaping individual life and whether they had made progress during their time spent in a university environment.

Alternatively, it was a way for university seniors to see how innocent the incoming influx of students would be. Generally the test grades people using a percentage scale, with 0 per cent being the least pure and 100 per cent being the purest.

It used to be voluntarily tested by new students to aid bonding with other similar students. Online purity tests were among the earliest of internet memes, popular on Usenet beginning in the early 1980s.

What does my score mean?

The score is between 0 and 100 – the higher the score, the more ‘pure’ you are. Rice Purity Test and feel bad about yourself for not having as low of a score as your friends.
